Getting there.....

After Mombassa, after being home a little while, after weddings and outings and hanging out with visitors, we went on a new journey, or, we continued our travel. This time to Marsabit, a sort of 'return home' and to visit A LOT of family.

The first part of the journey is relatively easy: we caught a bus from Thika to Isiolo, which takes about 4 hours. We stayed the night in Isiolo, and then set off the next morning to Marsabit. The first 200 or so kilometres are now paved. After the rather smooth sailing along the tarmac road, you arrive in Merrile, where you can stop at the lovely Travellers Inn for some sweet chai, chapatti and fresh goat meat....

We drove through Merille.... looked at all the beautiful Samburu and Rendille jewellery.. and continued along the long and now unpaved road to Marsabit...

Now i know you may not be able to see it in the photos (because of course we broke down on the only patches of road where there are NO potholes) but friends, to call this path a 'road' is an insult to all roads. There were potholes so big that, if there were any rain, me and my children could have comfortably bathed in. Our car broke down twice (and you can see it is a car that is MEANT for 'roads' like this) because the shock observer got blown out. Oh yes, i can assure you, if you are ever in Kenya and want to go on safari (which means 'travel' in Swahili) maybe you should try going to Marsabit!
8 hours later we arrived......
